Bulk cleanup

(this was going to be called Pikeys Tatting from my rubbish pile)

Twice a year Sandy City holds a household ‘bulk cleanup’ day. It’s a great service – and lets us get rid of big things that normally we’d have to drag across town to the tip. (Worth noting that a trip to the tip is the highlight of any weekend..)

This year we started putting things out – and instantly there were people out at night rummaging through our rubbish.

The Sandy City web site states:

Scavenging through piles is not permitted!

I emailed and asked what the legal position was – Paul Browning the Assistant Director of Public Works emailed me:

The official position is, as you found on the website, ”Scavenging through piles is not permitted”.  Since most of the scavenging occurs in the evening, we need the help of our residents to report it to the police department.  If you see a car in your neighborhood, get the make, model, and license plate number and call the police (840-4000).   In some cases, if a person would like to recycle metals, he/she should knock on the door of the homeowner and receive their permission to remove items.  This is acceptable since the homeowner is still “managing” the condition of the waste pile.  In most instances throughout the city, this doesn’t occur.  If you have additional comments or suggestions, please pass them to me.

So to the point of this blog. Last night I finally got round to removing the huge, ugly, steel shelves that the previous owners left in the basement. 8 feet tall, 4 feet wide – they are bigger than the door frames in the basement. I had to do the puzzle to get them out.

Within fifteen minutes of placing them on the cleanup pile – they were gone:

Tatting

Somehow I know they will be recycled – that’s the positive part.

Sorry to sound like an angry old man ;)
